i am feeling the winds of inspiration blowing away from me. in fact, they are blowing in another direction completely.
this was my first week of school and i cannot summon the desire to get into my student mind. is it always this hard to come back?
a highlight of my week has been walking in the university bookstore. there may not be many things i love about academia, but one thing that will always trap me in its magic is the university bookstore. i love love love walking through the aisles to see what teachers are going to be asking their students to read. i always i wish i could go back and do college again to take more classes - maybe theology, peace studies, design...who knows. today i almost bought two books. foucault and freire. and then i bought another book that wasn't assigned by a professor at tufts, peniel e. joseph. the book it Waiting 'Til the Midnight Hour: A Narrative History of Black Power in America. what i like about more contemporary historical writing is its narrative style...it invites even the worst memories in and asks you to feel through the past. then i found out he's coming to speak next week. maybe that will inspire me. the bookstore inspires me. it reminds me that freedom may not exist everywhere for everyone, but one public sphere that is safe for ideas is academia.
i'll share some photos with you now of mi cumpleanos. vienticinco! we climbed an active volcano. really, we did. Pacaya is the name of the volcano. yes it was dangerous, but i got to cross something off of my "things to do before you die" list. yes it was scary, but i'm sick of being a fraidy cat.
[our guide]
[s roasting a marshmallow over lava]
[real live lava oozing out of our earth! insane, right?]
[view on the way down]
[my hair after we got down. it was the scariest wind i've ever felt...and i happen to be standing next to lava.]
it was a good birthday. one to remember and not forget.
and here's a video!
