in the light years and space miles that i logged in my travel book through link jumping and bookmarking today i may have come closer to my vision for life. this is no small feat folks and i owe it all to the convenience of the internet. dear twenty-first century, thank you to no end for helping me light my fire of excitement and possibility.
now, i suppose i should begin by establishing how i view myself a bit here... in my life i taught english literature for two years, and i have taught journalism as well, and i have written well enough to get accepted into and graduate from graduate school, i have taught creative writing at the high school level, and taken some writing classes myself over my formative years, but never-have-i-ever truly considered myself a "writer." sure, i keep this blog and i admit that there is something a little self-righteous about assuming people exist in the world who want to break from their exhaustive lives to peer into my wordy windows, but still just because i have this little-known identity on the blogosphere...i have never really thought to myself, "hey girl - you are a writer!" well today, after my introduction into yet another sphere of the not-for-profit world, i am toying with the idea of sprucing up my self-image and thinking, "hey girl - you could be!"
an ex-colleague of mine is an employee of one of the coolest not-for-profit writing and tutoring organization in America: 826, Dave Eggers national writing center. I could just work for these folks and be really happy, however, the job rules so no one quits...and i've been creeping all the locations for some time now. i would like to suggest that they open a new center in Austin, TX and i'll help start it up and if anyone with money and power reads this then i am willing. i'm young, not completely jaded, and still believe that we can work together to achieve the impossible! take me! then, i float back into this reality, in my room in cambridge where the drizzles are trapping me inside my room and know that even if this doesn't happen my day of internet adventuring has taken me a baby step further toward envisioning my own non-profit where the language and arts (826) and imagination meet human rights education (facinghistory.org).
this is all on my vision for now though, it's just a seedling.
