"The secret of the Great Stories is that they have no secrets. The Great Stories are the ones you have heard and want to hear again. The ones you can enter anywhere and inhabit comfortably. They don’t deceive you with thrills and trick endings. They don’t surprise you with the unforeseen. They are as familiar as the house you live in. Or the smell of your lover’s skin. You know how they end, yet you listen as though you don’t. In the way that although you know that one day you will die, you live as though you won’t. In the Great Stories you know who lives, who dies, who finds love, who doesn’t. And yet you want to know again. THAT is their mystery and magic."
-Arundhati Roy, God of Small Things
it has happened. i have been consumed by the things i cannot know.
i'd give my left foot right now to have some sense of an ending, or of a beginning, or of promise. to revel in the mysteries of these "Great Stories."
when things get this wild into the unknown there is only one thing to do - dig deep and give in without giving up.
luckily, tonight i remembered this tribute album to the master of imagination, Shel Silverstein, that was released this month. take a free listen. its just great! really great! my favorite, is john prine's cover of "this guitar is for sale." i mean, even though "Daddy, What if?" has a baby singer (which I'm not into) working her baby magic it is still great! i'll be adding this to list of wants.
tonight a friend politely asked how my life was going and I responded with this assessment: "I want a lot of things I can't get my hands on right now." and this is one of 'em!
